Come on Kissy Kissy!

January 15, 2010 17:19

We've got so many darling Kissy Kissy clothes, and I'm afraid that our photography on the site hasn't been doing them justice. So, through the end of the month we're offering 15% off all personalized Kissy Kissy clothes and gifts. You won't find Kissy Kissy gifts starting at $14.99 anywhere else - trust me. Take advantage, and spread the word! Just use coupon code KK15 through January 31st.

I've included some photos of my favorites, including a personalized bib, hooded towel, and my current favorite newborn gift: a personalized Kissy Kissy Hat and matching Converter Gown! I mean come on, does layette come any cuter? We've also got onesies, blankets, and even sun hats. And where else can you add your favorite animal for free? Oh, and: a shout out to my nieces/models Rylee Belle and Maren, who I call Maren Bear even though she's sporting an elephant in this particular shot. You go girls!

It's wonderful to have the support of the St. Louis region!

I'm very excited (and nervous) for Makaboo's first TV appearance! And wouldn't you know, it's going to be live. Yikes! Glad I'll be surrounded by charming lovies and pillows to keep me company and make me look good!

If you're in the St. Louis area, turn into KMOV Channel 4 at 10am on Friday 1/8. If you're outside of St. Louis, I'll post a link to the segment as soon as it's available.

Wish us luck!

2010 is the Year of the Monkey!

December 31, 2009 18:20

It's been a thrilling few weeks. We've had far more orders than we expected for a soft launch, and so far our Angel Dear Pillow Pals are our best sellers! Love seeing little personalized giraffes, froggies and duckies making their way into loving homes across the country.

Speaking of which, we had our first order snafu last week! Dia's puppy pillow went to Will, and Will's puppy went to Dia. When we went to resew the orders, somehow we sewed monkeys instead of puppies! Thankfully both orders were local, which meant we were hand-delivering puppies on Christmas Eve - just in time to get them under the tree!

Mixed up puppies and monkeys?!?!

I love my life.

Happy New Year!

It's Alive!

December 11, 2009 15:28

Well, Makaboo launched at 10:35pm last Thursday, December 3rd. Today we're celebrating our 8 day anniversary!

It's so gratifying to see the site live, and to watch orders coming in from all over the country. It's also been funny to hear from my parents, who seem to finally really *get* Makaboo now that they can see it, shop on it, send their friends to it etc. My mom has gone through 50 business cards since Sunday, and asked if she could include promotional materials in her holiday cards. And my dad has called every day to ask "how many hits" I have; he even sent an email out to his law office joking about how far this particular apple fell from the tree (he had to dictate the email to his administrative assistant. He does not know what Google is.)

So far I have done zero marketing - haven't even emailed the newsletter out yet - and we're averaging 3 orders a day. I feel pretty good about that.

So, stay tuned, and send your friends! You can become a fan at, and follow us @MakabooGifts on Twitter.

Here's to week two!

This Is It

December 3, 2009 00:41

Well, I think we've made it. Some time in the next 22 hours Makaboo will become a reality. I can't wait.

Thank you to everyone on the team who has worked so hard to get us this far.

I can't wait to see what happens next. My fingers are crossed, and I'm holding my breath!

Life really, truly is yours for the making. I hope we prove it.

We Think We Can, We Think We Can!

We're 48 hours from launching what we hope is the cutest personalized baby gifts site on the web. Hold on to your hats! And check back on Thursday!

We're Really On To Something

November 16, 2009 11:20

On Thursday I walked over to my brother and sister-in-law's house to help get their five-, three- and one-year-old girls ready for a surprise birthday dinner for their mom. We were getting the youngest, Maren, dressed and talking about how cute her dress was when Ava, the five-year-old, turned to me and said "You should sell these on Makaboo."

Again: "You should sell these on Makaboo."

From the five-year-old.

She knows the name of my business?!?!?!?

She knows to say "on" because it's a web site?!?!?!?

And: she was totally right, the dresses would be perfect and are totally embroiderable.

I think we're really on to something here.

Our Sweetest Order Yet

November 2, 2009 14:39

Friday we were working away in the shop when a cute woman walked in, and, looking flustered, pronounced:

"I need to get a baby gift."

I started my spiel about how everything is embroidered right here in the shop and asked who the gift was for, but before I could finish she blurted:

"I just found out I'm pregnant. And you're the first person I've told. And I want to get something to share the news with my husband. Oh my gosh that sounds so weird!" Then she burst into tears.

We hugged, and the woman cried some more, and Lorie my embroiderer got a little weepy. We settled on a teeny KissyKissy onesie, which we sewed with the baby’s last name on the bum. We embroidered it for her on the spot, so she could walk back to her apartment and share the news with her hubby. Her plan was to say “I got some new clothes today, want to see them?”

THAT is why I started Makaboo: we get to be a part of one of the most exciting, love-filled, and rejuvenating adventures of the human experience: welcoming someone new to the world.

So, to the mom-to-be, who shall remain anonymous because she hasn’t told family and friends yet: thank you for letting Makaboo be a part of your growing family’s story. We’re so excited for you, and we can’t wait to meet the little one.

I think it’s a boy, by the way.
